Visiting the House
The Dining Room

The familiar high-back chairs and a dining table stand firmly as a focus in the centre of the Dining Room. Around the walls a series of intricate Gesso panels have been created as an interpretation of the tiny details given on the original design. Telling the ‘Life of the Rose’, these panels indicate Margaret MacDonald’s important decorative influence within Mackintosh’s work.

The smooth carved detail of the central fireplace and stencilled decoration also show alternative translations of Mackintosh’s favourite rose motif. The rose theme is echoed throughout the room from the carpet and stained glass inserts in the sliding door, to the stemmed rose details on the sideboard. The pendant lamps that light the room are of a jewel-like quality in the pastel shades characteristic of Mackintosh’s work.
