Displaying in the Art Lovers Cafe Gallery from 26th May - 4th July 2011 is Robin Gillanders 'Little Sparta'.

Robin Gillanders photographed in the neo-classical garden of internationally renowned artist, Ian Hamilton Finlay, from 1993 up until Finlay’s death in March of 2006. The Garden, Little Sparta, at Dunsyre in the Pentland Hills, is a modern conception of a classical garden with sculptures, stone inscriptions and other artifacts placed within the landscape. These photographs were made between 1993 and 1998. They were first exhibited at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 1998, along with many of the collaborations that Finlay and Gillanders engaged with at that time. His photographs are a personal response to this remarkable environment. Over the years he familiarized himself with the garden's topography and Finlay's poetry and thought. As he came to know the place, there was a growing spiritual and imaginative response and, with this, a sense of permission to explore the landscape on his own terms. This sense of possibilities opening before him echoes Finlay's observation: ‘A garden is not an object but a process’.

The Art Lovers Cafe Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm. All artworks are available for purchase.
