Review by The Entertainment Guide

Dispel any notions of a cafe in the traditional sense of the word. Think upmarket bistro in exquisiste surroundings. Located in the renowned House for an Art Lover and designed in 1901 by Glasgow's most celebrated artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Situated on the ground floor, there is easy access for the disabled and having watched the staff assist someone in a wheel chair, they really couldn't have been more hopeful. The decor is predominantly white but works well as a blank canvas for the artwork which adorns the walls; also available to buy. The cafe has many regular customers, which would explain why it was suprisingly busy for a wet Monday lunchtime.

The vegetarian selection was so impressive I decided to ditch my meat eating habits for the day. From the a la carte menu I chose cream of carrot soup (£2.75) which proved to be absolutely divine. Unlike other carrot soups I've tasted, this had much more depth and consistency making it a filling and tasty option. My main course arrived looking good enough to rival the stunning landscape print I had just been admiring above my table. Described on the menu as a risotto of butternut squash and baby leeks with Maris piper crisps and truffle oil (£8.50), I would highly recommend this dish.

The waitress recommended the sticky ginger and toffee pudding (£4.50) but I managed to restrain myself. The ambience at Art Lover' Cafe is laid back but the quality of the food makes it a popular destination for the most discerning of diners. The staff were well turned out and always on hand to offer assistance.

Lunch is served seven days, from 12 noon until around 4 pm and there is also a set menu where you can enjoy three courses for just £13.95. High chairs are available for children as well as the 'menu for little art lovers.' House red and white wine is available by the glass (£2.50 for 125 ml) or by the bottle, (£13.50). I rounded off my meal with a cappuccino. great value at just £1.35. The Cafe shares its entrance with Bellahouston Ski Centre; located just off Dumbreck Road. Overall, Art lovers' Cafe is a delight in every sense of the word.
